You may notice 2 different statuses that can be set: Item status and sale status:

Order Pending will be the status of the sale while the status of an item is On Order. Once the status of the item is set to Received, the sale status will be updated to Ready for Customer, indicating the item is ready to be delivered or picked up. If the customer wants you to hold on to it for a while, you can update it to Hold for Customer, and once it is delivered, the sale status would be updated to Delivered.Â
The item status applies to the entire item, while the sale status only applies to the item on the sales order. For example, if you order 3 tables for inventory and then receive them, the item status will be Received. Then say customer A buys 1 so you add it to a sales order. They want you to hold onto it for a while so you set the sale status to Hold for customer. Customer B also buys 1 so you add 1 to their sales order. That customer takes it home so you set the sale status to Carry Out. So the sale status allows you to track the status of just what that customer bought, where the item status is the overall status of the item itself which can be added to multiple sales orders.Â
You can see an example of this in the item details page for an item that has been added to multiple sales - for this item, it has been received and the sale status is different for each customer since 1 is ready for the customer while the other is being held for the customer:
